SOOF EMBROIDERY CRAFT

Soof Embroidery is probably the best kind of art amongst Gujarat's long-standing tradition of embroidery of distinct styles, and is characterised by vibrant colors and mirror work. Soof is done with the surface satin stitch from the reverse side of the fabric. The embroidery is worked by the careful counting of warp and weft threads, without the pattern being drawn on the fabric. As no paper patterns or reference books are used, the embroiderer (mostly women) needs skill and imagination to guide the embroidery. They mentally picture the motifs and composition, then count the pattern or motifs out, and work the embroidery from the reverse of the fabric. Embroiderers prefer working on an evenly-woven cotton fabric as it aids in the counting of threads.

Fine, single-color threads are used for the embroidery, and the stitches appearing on the main face are often a centimeter long. Successive stitches are only one thread of the fabric weave apart, which makes for a dense patterning. As the stitches give the embroidery a linear and geometric effect, motifs such as the peacock, stars or flowers take on a stylized form. Most of the motifs are worked with the triangle as a form. Bright and contrasting colors of threads and small mirrors worked in the embroidery give it a bright appearance. Traditionally, Soof has been worked on a variety of articles including garments, bedspreads, wall hangings, quilts, torans, cradle cloths, animal trappings and cushion covers. Embroiderers now create a range of more contemporary textiles like tablecloths, jackets, dress materials and spectacle cases for the urban market much to the delight of textile lovers and urban clients.

ARI EMBROIDERY CRAFT

Aari embroidery is a minute chain stitch done by a hook which is an adaptation of the cobbler's awl. This is a very delicate and floral style of embroidery, Influenced by Moghul designs. By using subtle gradations' of color the figures and motifs in the designs can be highly representational. Work understands embroidery, stitch, and motif as one cohesive and indivisible unit.

KHAREK EMBROIDERY CRAFT

Kharek embroidery is done by the Sodha, Rajput &, Megwar Communities, Kharek Embroidery is first counted out in Black double running stitch, and then filled in with satin stitch; the end result is of clusters of bar like shapes. Artisans who do Kharek work understand embroidery, stitch, and motif as one cohesive and indivisible unit.

SOOF EMBROIDERY

Soof embroidery is also done by the Sodha, Rajput and Megwar communities. It is a counted thread styles using only one stitch also called soof, meaning 'neat and clean'. The designs are highly geometric, with a predominance of a chevron design called 'leher' or 'waves'. Any representational motifs are highly stylized. The surface satin stitch is worked from the back of the fabric by counting the weave of the fabric and inserting the needle of regular and designated intervals The designs for Soof embroidery cannot be pre drawn and are left to the discretion of the individual craftswomen, who need a good grasp of geometry to work out their designs.
